Because it was so clear to me after my husband’s passing that his body was only a shell, like the cocoon after the butterfly emerges, my quest to discover where he had gone began with investigating mediumship.
The first book I read of a spiritual nature was Hello from Heaven; I was intrigued to learn that 42% of Americans and 67% of all widows believe they have been in contact with someone who has died! Even more riveting was the account from Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, a world-renowned psychiatrist and pioneer in the field of death and dying, of her encounter with a former patient who had passed away almost a year prior (I wouldn’t do the story justice – read the book).
Next I explored the writings of Raymond Moody, who coined the term ‘near-death experience’ with his 1975 bestseller Life After Life. Since then many others have written about their personal NDEs or investigated such reports. I moved on to mediums like John Edward and John Holland, who are able to connect with the spirits of the deceased. However, experiencing what is termed ‘a reading’ with an excellent medium – one who produces very specific, validating information on your loved one in spirit – is more convincing than any book. Having said that, for those who prefer a study of the area I suggest The Afterlife Experiments by Gary Schwartz.
The term mediumship encompasses not just connecting with deceased loved ones but with any form of Spirit including other spiritually-advanced spirits or groups of spirits. Maurice Barbanell (1902-1981) was a journalist and atheist/agnostic who set out to debunk Spiritualism by attending and reporting on séances. At his second séance to his mind he fell asleep, but upon waking was informed by others that he had been in trance and speaking on behalf of an Indian spirit named Silver Birch. Barbanell’s story makes a compelling read but it is the teachings of Silver Birch that stand out amongst all I have uncovered, as the purest form of wisdom, truth and love. Unfortunately, the Silver Birch books are not widely available but may be found, used, through Amazon or new from the Lily Dale Bookstore.
Why am I telling you about mediumship on a website dedicated to health and wellness? Because it is healing and uplifting to understand that:
- Your deceased loved one lives on and knows what is happening in your life
- All life is continuous; you are a spiritual being having a human experience and thus cannot die
- Your immortality points to a greater purpose and meaning to your life – doesn’t that make you want understand more about who you are, why you are here, and the true nature of reality?
- There are many in the Spirit World who assist you in your journey
I leave you with one of my favourite quotes for consideration….
